About Black Girls Count, the book

1, 2, 3, 4, 5… Black Girls Count to 10 Hairstyles! is a joyful, rhyming picture book that invites children to explore early math through the beauty and creativity of Black girl hairstyles.

Each page blends counting, culture, and confidence — celebrating beads, braids, puffs, twists, and curls while helping young learners build number sense and pride in who they are.

Designed for ages 3–8, this book supports early math development while affirming identity, representation, and self-expression. Because when children see themselves reflected in learning, every number truly counts.

Meet the Author

Sheree Ahmed is an award-winning educator, author, and mother from the Maryland–DC area who believes learning should feel joyful, affirming, and deeply reflective of the children it serves.

Inspired by her own childhood, classroom experiences, and her life as a mother, Sheree founded Black Girls Count to celebrate Black girlhood while supporting foundational mathematics learning skills. Her work centers representation, confidence, and creativity — reminding children that who they are should be constantly infused in their learning experiences.

Through Black Girls Count, Sheree hopes to spark curiosity, nurture pride, and help young learners see themselves as capable, brilliant, and worthy from the very beginning.
